Killed in accident at the Deptford Docks
From the South London Press, Saturday 13 September 1902 FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE DOCKS.
At an inquiry held on Tuesday at the Southwark Coroner's Court regarding the death of James Frederick Cunliffe, aged 27, of 33 Reginald-road, Deptford, it was stated by Edwin Holland, stevedore, that deceased was engaged in unloading timber from the s.s. Belgium in the Surrey Commercial Dock. As a set of deals was being hoisted out of the hold wiutness saw there was a strain on the rope, and told the man driving the winch to lower the timber. A moment afterwards witness "saw everything fly," and found that the block had broken. Deceased was struck on the head. Answering a solicitor who appeared for deceased's widow, witness said he did not know the block was bought from the Government as condemned stock. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
